What is Networking?

There are various definitions of Networking available on the web. Some we like are:

Two or more devices (or people) that can communicate with each other and share resources.
Expanding one's social network or sphere of influence by initiating mutually advantageous new relationships with people.

You may have your own interpretation. Essentially, for us, it's about people meeting people.

How Networking works in WBa

Wirral Business Association provide a venue and a nominated time for people to meet. The organisers offer introductions but the rest is up to you. You chat and get to know others in the group while they in turn get to know you.

There is no formality. You don't have to stand up in a room full of strangers and give a speech. If you need help and advice simply ask around - you'd be suprised who can help. it's about sharing information and knowledge not just cash.

What should you do?

Be yourself.
Be polite.
Be open.
Listen.

Ask others what they do. They in turn will ask what you do. Being a good listener will you make you a great networker. Have fun. We hold a very informal evening which often entails many funny stories and lots of laughter. Networking isn't hard work if you approach it right.

Will I get results right away?

Well it's quite possible that in your first meeting you'll walk away with a lucrative contract - but I doubt it. It takes time to get to trust somebody. Getting to know your fellow members well will help you know if they are trustworthy and worth recommending to your contacts. It will also give you the knowledge to know if that person is 'right for the job'. Networking isn't an instant fix - it's about building relationships.

Don't be disappointed with only a few members present. It's not about quantity it's about quality. I'd rather network with just few people when I can get to know them better. In a room full of 50 people I might just miss that ideal contact.

But do remember you are there to form business relationships - friendship is just a bonus.
